Professional Program: Classical Ballet

Participation in Open, Repertoire and guest teacher classes, as well as Professional Productions such as The Nutcracker, Giselle, and Coppelia is offered exclusively to our students enrolled in the full pre-professional ballet program.

Repertoire Class

This class is offered to the Pre-Professional student in the 2nd year Intermediate Exam Class, Advanced Foundation, Advance 1 or Advanced 2 level of ballet training. It offers the dancer an opportunity to learn the Choreography and Variations from such famous classical ballets as Giselle, Coppelia, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and Les Sylphides. Dancers will find this class most helpful when preparing for all Advanced Level Ballet Examinations, Competitions, Solo Seal, as well as our ballet productions.

Solo Seal Class

This is the final syllabus and examination of the Royal Academy of Dance, Vocational Grades. Candidates may enter the Solo Seal examination after passing the Advanced 2 examination. The examination includes a public performance, on stage in a theatre before an audience of parents, family, friends, dancers, teachers and interested observers who must purchase a ticket to view this special event. Dancers must perform a select number of Classical Variations. There will be two evaluators; one will be an Examiner of the Royal Academy and the other will be a Professional Ballet Dancer, Director, or Choreographer from a Ballet Company. The Solo Seal traditionally has been held either in Toronto or Vancouver. The successful completion of this level usually leads to a contract from a Professional Ballet Company.

Ballet R.A.D.

It is most important for any student who is serious about his/her dancing to take ballet lessons. Those wishing to dance “en pointe” (on pointe shoes) must be enrolled in the Pre-Professional Senior program and have the teacher’s consent. The Royal Academy of Dance is the most internationally recognized system of ballet training and examination. It is represented in 72 countries around the world. The Pre-Primary to Pre-Professional Children’s program offers ballet training through gradual progressions, demanding no more of a young body than it can easily cope with. The Pre-Professional Senior program leads to a professional career as a dancer or teacher.

Jazz classes are offered from the age of 6 years. All classes are based upon the A.D.A.P.T system of training which encourages dynamic performance as well as excellent technique. Jazz terminology, introduction of new step combinations, and dance variations are challenging but fun as the student is able to progress at a rate consistent with his or her own abilities. Examinations will be offered to serious Jazz students.

Jazz Technique Class

This class is a high energy, dynamic course designed for the serious jazz or ballet student who wishes to upgrade his/her technical skill. It offers an in-depth, intensive study of advanced techniques including multiple pirouettes, advanced movements of elevation as well as increased strength and flexibility. This course is to be taken in conjunction with jazz or ballet and is not to be taken instead of the regular program. The focus is on skill development only, therefore, it will not lead to a choreographed number in the recital. All members of the Competitive Teams are required to take this class.

Tap classes begin at age 5 and are offered at all levels including Professional. All tap classes are based upon the technique and style of Rhythm Tap and Broadway Musicals. This system of tap dancing encourages technical excellence, clarity, shading, syncopation and rhythmic patterning. Dancers who complete their studies through the levels to Pre-Professional class will have the skills necessary to dance professionally in Tap and Musical Theatre Productions. A.D.A.P.T. Examinations offered.

Contemporary dance training is offered to pre-professional ballet students beginning at the Grade 2 level. Classes are based upon the technique of Martha Graham and Jose Limon. Dancers who progress through the levels will have the skills necessary to dance in a professional contemporary dance company.

Musical Theatre

Musical Theatre is a unique form of dance developed by the late Jack Cole and made popular by the great Broadway Choreographers Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins, Michael Bennett, Gower Champion and others. It is a uniquely blended and stylized technique developed for the Broadway stage. The acting, singing and dancing must contribute equally to advancing the storyline. This course will lead directly to competition routines in Musical Theatre and our school's Musical Theatre Productions. It will also prepare dancers for High School Productions and future professional work.
